My time at Rice has been greatly enriched with Coalition Rice; it’s inspiring to be surrounded by those who are so similarly passionate about serving the greater Houston community. Through club projects that connect Rice students to our community partners, we hope to increase societal awareness of hunger and homelessness. I’m so excited to meet all of y’all!

 

 

Candi Zhao

I joined Coalition Rice last year, and found the goals and activities inspiring and accessible as a way to connect Rice students to the homeless population in Houston. Coalition Rice is a valuable opportunity spread awareness of societal issues of hunger and homelessness and to work with people passionate about doing everything we can to give back to our communities, and I’m so excited to work with you all to do so!

I have been in Coalition Rice since my freshman year. In my freshman year, I really appreciated the genuineness of the Sandwich for All Events, and throughout the past three years, it has been an incredibly rewarding experience interacting with the homeless community in Houston and helping them out with our best efforts!

I joined Rice Coalition because our club is an accessible way for students to give back to the community. The club connects Rice students with the homeless communities in Houston and provides opportunities to help people who experience housing insecurity.

My first interaction with Coalition was through a Christmas Stocking event where we were able to assemble snacks and cold weather necessities for people facing homelessness in our community. I value the multitude of opportunities provided by Coalition to work with underserved communities using the resources that we have as Rice students.

I joined Coalition Rice as a freshman and tutored for the Covenant House. This opportunity gave me a way to give back to the Houston community while teaching me about a variety of underserved populations. I am excited to serve as a board member this year to further help utilize Rice students and resources to help those in need, especially during our contemporary moment with the coronavirus crisis.

Coalition Rice has given me an outlet to make a difference outside the Rice bubble with small, meaningful actions. I started out as a tutor at Covenant House and my eyes were opened to the importance of helping the homeless in Houston, especially as students at a university with a multitude of resources. Serving these underserved communities has been an incredibly valuable experience, and I am excited to continue serving on the board of Coalition Rice.

 

Jesus Galvan

As someone who has seen the effects of homelessness and poverty in underserved communities firsthand, Coalition provides us an opportunity to not only help these marginalized communities, but also see how our work impacts them in the long run. Having the ability to provide so much help to these communities is what encourages me as a member and an officer.

Last year, I participated in Coalition as a tutor through Covenant House, and I saw just how valuable Coalition was in providing structured and consistent support to underserved communities in Houston. Especially given the effects of the current global pandemic, Coalition Rice is an excellent opportunity to help those who are in need.
