Rice Coalition on Hunger and Homelessness is dedicated to combating systemic poverty and homelessness in Houston. Through initiatives like sandwich pack preparation, off-site events, panel discussions, and insurance programs, we aim to make a meaningful impact on the community.
Projects
Our projects focus on providing essential support to those facing poverty and homelessness. We host regular events that encourage our members to think critically about poverty and homelessness.
Sandwiches for All
We collaborate with local shelters every month to prepare hundreds of sack lunches and snack packs.
Sandwich University
We regularly visit local middle schools such as Tanglewood and Lanier to teach students about food insecurity and poverty. We host sandwich packing sessions and deliver them to local shelters.
Insurance Initiative
We partner with Montrose Grace Place and Lord of the Streets to assist members of Houston’s homeless community with applications to government-sponsored programs such as Medicaid.
Panel Events
We host panel events that feature professors, social workers, and public figures who are knowledgeable about homelessness and poverty in Houston. These events provide Rice students with valuable insight into how the Houston community is currently developing and implementing long-term solutions to homelessness.
Off-Site Events
Every month, we partner with a local organization to host an off-site service event during which volunteers provide direct relief to the surrounding Houston community.
